Help Protect SNAP - A lifeline for fighting hunger

Join us in making sure no one in our community goes hungry by protecting programs like SNAP that efficiently take care of those who need it most.

At United Way, we believe communities are stronger when our neighbors have food on their table, a roof over their table and gas in their car to get to work. But the fact is, too many families are struggling to make ends meet, and now Congress may make it even harder on them.

A House bill is threatening to take away food from nearly 2 million families, workers and those in between jobs through deep cuts to SNAP. The program helps families that fall on tough times get access to food while they get back on their feet and helps workers in low-wage jobs make ends meet. A bipartisan Senate bill would largely preserve and improve SNAP.

“I had to leave my house out of the blue one day because of domestic violence,” said a working mom of a 13-month-old.  “If it hadn’t been for SNAP, I would not have been able to provide the food I needed for myself and my daughter.

Samuel from Texas, whose father was a veteran, recalls the difficulties his dad faced when he retired for health reasons.

“His fixed income did not allow much in help to get his necessities,” Samuel explained “Getting SNAP allowed him to get food and get the nutrition he needed.”

Emily from New Hampshire, a mom of three kids explained her circumstances this way: “My family has experienced cuts from SNAP and it takes money away from being able to put gas in my car to get to work or even buying diapers for my youngest. I also have to choose between which bill gets paid, in turn causing late fees that I can't afford.”

We can’t let situations like these affect millions of more families. That’s why on June 21, as part of our global Day of Action, advocates from across the U.S. are meeting with their Members of Congress to make sure those most in need – especially children, seniors, veterans – don’t go hungry. We are advocating for the bipartisan SNAP provisions in the Senate Farm Bill to move forward. Read more.
